Sometimes the Good Guys Finish First

From the movie soundtrack “The Secret Of My Success” (1987)

S-U-C-C-E-S-S
That’s the way we spell success
Will we get it, the answers yes
S-U-C-C-E-S-S

Small town boy, so clean he squeaks
Dressed and polished for the big time dreams
Got a letter from his ma, and a boyish grin
Close his eyes one minute, and it’ll lead him to the win, Yeah

You know there’s nothin’ like heaven that won’t get you back
To you get your ass in gear, and your mind on track
When wheels start turnin’, things start to fall into place
You’ll be suprised what you can do and some talents all it takes
Yeah

Chorus:

Sometimes The Good Guys Finish First
Sometimes your best is all it takes
You know that, Sometimes The Good Guys Finish First
Sometimes The Good Guys, Finish First

Back on logic, turn your head around
Use the front door and avoid the crowds
They’ll be tryin’ to tell you that it can’t be done
Cause the big boys on their own gave us half the fun, hey hey

(Repeat Chorus Twice)

The Good Guys, the Good Guys, the Good Guys, Finish First

(Chorus)

Sometimes The Good Guys Finish First
Walkin’ a straight line in reverse
You know that, Sometimes The Good Guys Finish First
Sometimes The Good Guys, Finish First

(Chorus)

  • Liner notes from Synchronistic Wanderings:

Pat: I always liken writing songs for films to being a hired gun. That’s not always a bad thing. I mean, they give you the parameters of the contents of the song, they pay all the expenses and they give you lots of money. So it’s kind of fun… But that organic, free spirit, “I’m in control” part of the equation disappears. I never really liked that aspect. Still in all, Neil, Holly and I had a good time working together. I especially had fun coaching the ‘pep squad’ we used for the intro.

Neil: Was going for another different kind of approach here. Wanted to keep it very light sounding to the point of silliness. The sound that comes in and out through the track was the Jimi Hendrix Are You Experienced? record played through a portable cassette player that I miked and delayed and turned on and off quickly. Wanted to create a sound that you couldn’t tell what it was but something to add percussion, without it being a percussion instrument.
